Why the right oil matters
An oil change is the cheapest thing you can do for an engine, and the one visit where somebody who knows cars sees yours from underneath. That matters more than it sounds. Most leaks, torn boots and worn parts are caught during an oil change, while they are still small.
The oil itself has to match the engine. The owner's manual lists a viscosity, such as 0W-20 or 5W-30, and often a manufacturer approval. European engines are strict about this: BMW Longlife, Mercedes-Benz 229 series and Volkswagen 504/507 oils are not interchangeable with whatever is on sale.
When your car is due for an oil change
- The oil service reminder is on
- You are at the distance or time in your maintenance schedule
- The oil on the dipstick is low, very dark or gritty
- Ticking from the engine on a cold start
- Mostly short trips, where the engine rarely warms up fully
- You just bought the car and do not know when it was last done

Oil change questions
How often should I change my oil?
Follow the interval in your maintenance schedule, and use the severe service interval if most of your driving is short trips, stop and go traffic or cold starts. That describes a lot of Toronto driving.
Is synthetic oil worth it?
For most cars built in the last fifteen years it is not a choice: the engine was designed for it. Synthetic flows better on a cold start and holds up better to heat, which is why the intervals are longer.
Why does my European car need a specific oil?
Those engines run long service intervals, turbochargers and exhaust filters that the wrong oil can damage. The manufacturer tests and approves specific oils. The approval code is printed on the bottle and listed in your manual.
My oil level drops between changes. Is that normal?
A small amount of consumption is normal on many engines, turbocharged ones in particular. A noticeable drop, blue smoke or oil spots on the driveway are worth a look.
