Transmission repair and service in Scarborough

Many transmission problems start as a fluid problem. We check the simple things before anyone talks about a rebuild.

Transmission gears

A bad shift is not always a bad transmission

A transmission that shifts badly is not always a transmission that needs replacing. Low or worn-out fluid, a leaking seal, a failed solenoid or software that needs an update can all cause the same symptoms as internal damage.

We work on conventional automatics, CVTs, dual-clutch gearboxes such as the Volkswagen and Audi DSG, and manual transmissions with their clutches. Each type takes its own fluid, and the wrong one causes damage.

Signs of a transmission problem

  • Engine revs rise but the car does not pull
  • Harsh, late or jerky shifts
  • A delay going into drive or reverse
  • Shudder when pulling away
  • Red or brown fluid under the car
  • A burning smell, or a transmission warning light

How we diagnose a transmission

  1. 01

    Scan and road test

Transmission codes, live data and a drive to feel the fault.

  2. 02

    Fluid check

Level and condition, checked at the correct temperature the way the manufacturer specifies.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis and options

Service, repair or replacement, with the cost of each.

  4. 04

    The work

Done with the fluid specified for that exact transmission, then retested.

Transmission questions we get asked

My manual says the transmission fluid is lifetime. Do I ever need to change it?

Fluid wears out like any other oil. Several transmission manufacturers recommend a fluid service even where the car maker calls it filled for life. ZF, which builds the automatics in many BMW, Audi and Land Rover models, recommends a change roughly every 80,000 to 120,000 km.

Is a fluid change the same as a flush?

No. A drain and fill replaces part of the fluid and is the gentler method. A machine flush exchanges nearly all of it. Which one suits your car depends on the transmission and its history.

Can I keep driving if it goes into limp mode?

Limp mode holds one gear to protect the transmission and get you off the road. Use it to get to a shop, at moderate speed, and stay off the highway.

What is a DSG service?

Dual-clutch gearboxes use their own fluid and, on many models, a filter. Volkswagen and Audi set an interval for it. Skipped services are a common cause of rough shifting on these cars.

How do I know my clutch is worn?

The engine revs climb without the car speeding up, usually in a higher gear under load, or the pedal bites very near the top of its travel.
